Automatic back raking machine prevents clogging during heavy rainfall
In the coastal area of Mill Lane in Beaumaris, located on the island of Anglesey in Wales (UK), we installed an automatic back raking screen cleaner as a solution to flooding. The installation prevents blockages in the drainage system during peak loads caused by heavy rainfall and increased sea levels. The system helps protect the area against flooding and is in line with the increasing demand for robust climate adaptation solutions.
The effects of climate change - such as extreme rainfall and rising sea levels - are creating new demands on water infrastructure worldwide. This installation in Anglesey is a good example of how local authorities are betting on preventive measures to reduce damage and nuisance.

What we delivered
For this project in Wales, Noardling supplied a fully automatic back raking screen cleaner with associated controls. The chain cleaner was installed at a crucial point in the local drainage system, where debris, branches and flotsam pose a risk to flow. By removing the debris automatically and continuously, the risk of blockages is greatly reduced.
The screen cleaner works on the principle of a conveyor belt: the collected dirt is transported upwards from the bottom and discharged at the top to a collection platform. The grab then returns empty.
The screen cleaner starts automatically when the water level on the inflow side rises compared to the outflow side. This level difference occurs when debris accumulates, causing a kind of dam effect. Once the accumulated material is removed and the water level normalises, the system automatically switches itself off again.
Why this solution?
- Automatic operation in case of level difference
- Reliable removal of dirt
- Low-maintenance
- Compact design
- Contributes to climate adaptation
- Suitable for fluctuating flow levels
