RecoLab, Helsingborg
The new Oceanhamnen district in Helsingborg, Sweden, uses decentralised wastewater treatment. With the innovative sanitation concept of Desah BV will collect and process grey and black water from 320 new homes/buildings separately. The kitchens are also equipped with a grinder for processing food waste. The black water and kitchen waste are treated in anaerobic digesters. This concept helps reuse water, nutrients and energy.
Landustrie received the order from Swedish company NCC to realise the electromechanical works for the new wastewater treatment plant to be built. The project was brought about by NSVA an umbrella Swedish water company to which six cities belong.
The RecoLab, where the facility is built, has an educational function and also acts as a test site for developing new technologies.
Back in 2015, the new sanitation system won the Swedish innovation prize in the "Blackwater and Food Waste Challenge" in the "Treatment Plant" category, aimed at recycling waste streams. The jury report stated, "a compact wastewater treatment plant was developed for the project. A concept that contributes to increased recirculation of water, nutrients and energy."
In 2022, the same project has been nominated for the Global Water Award in the Wastewater Project of the Year category.
